The Shanghai Exhibition Center is a professional economic entity engaged in conference and exhibition services, established with the approval of the Shanghai Municipal Government. The main building was completed in March 1955 and was originally named the "Sino-Soviet Friendship Building." It was the first dedicated exhibition venue in Shanghai after the founding of the People’s Republic of China. The center is managed by Shanghai Exhibition Center (Group) Co., Ltd., which also oversees Shanghai Expo Center Co., Ltd. and Shanghai Center Ltd.
The Russian-style architecture of the Shanghai Exhibition Center is unique among Shanghai’s architectural landscape, characterized by grand elegance and intricate decorations. It has received numerous accolades, including:
- "Top 10 Buildings in Shanghai (1949–1989)" in 1989
- "Top 10 Golden Award Classic Buildings of Shanghai’s 50th Anniversary" in 1999
- Recognized as Shanghai’s fourth batch of historic buildings in 2005
The exhibition center occupies 93,000 square meters, with a total construction area of 80,000 square meters. Situated between the bustling Nanjing West Road and the major traffic artery Yan'an Middle Road, it enjoys a prime central location in Shanghai. The facility has undergone multiple interior renovations while maintaining its original architectural charm, establishing a "South Exhibition, North Conference" layout.
The venue features a total exhibition area of 22,000 square meters and includes over 40 multifunctional conference rooms and halls. The southern section comprises the Main Entrance Hall, Central Hall, East Hall 1, and West Hall 1, forming the exhibition zone. The northern section includes the Friendship Hall and East Hall 2, forming the conference zone. While both sections operate independently, they are also interconnected, creating a flexible and adaptable venue configuration that allows for the seamless integration of exhibitions and conferences.
